MICHIGAN SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
1999 ANNUAL MEETING

Looking Backward; Looking Ahead
Sociology in the Next Millennium

CALVIN COLLEGE, OCTOBER 16, 1999

Keynote Speaker: Steve Steele

Steve Steele began his career as a sociologist in the mid-1960s at Schoolcraft College in Livonia. At that time he was working at Detroit Diesel, an experience he credits with turning him to applied sociology. He went on to receive his BA and MA degrees in sociology at Eastern Michigan University and his PhD from Catholic University in Washington, DC. For most of his professional career, he has taught at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland. It was there in 1978 that he established the Center for the Study of Social Issues. With co-sponsorship of the American Sociological Association, the Center organized three national workshops on starting local research centers. Steve has published numerous books and articles and has served in a variety of roles with the ASA and other professional organizations. As president of Applied Data Associates, Inc., a small consulting company, he does evaluation research and planning for local organizations. In 1992-93, he was president of the Society for Applied Sociology and was that organization's executive officer in 1997-98.
